Biography

UPI - ljudska univerza Žalec (UPI Žalec) is a public, non-profit institution for education and training of adults in the Savinja Valley region. Founded in June 1975 by the Municipality of Žalec (at present, six communities are founders) it has seen a great development of its education programs, guidance and counselling services. Today UPI Žalec offers a diverse range of formal and non-formal education programs, provides quality guidance and counselling services and is involved in various projects. It regularly employs 10 professionals and cooperates with 200 outsourced teachers and professionals from various fields. In last years the organization has worked with various vulnerable groups, in particular with seniors, the unemployed and migrants. In order to implement its activities the organization closely co-operates with organizations/institutions at local/regional/national level: municipalities, local and regional employment services, universities of third age, local and regional libraries, ministry of education, science and sport; ministry of labour, family and social affairs; ministry of interior affairs; Slovenian institute of Adult Education, National exam centre etc. UPI Žalec is a member of Slovenian Association of Education and Counselling Centres for Adults. Its activities are: I. Formal education programmes for adults - primary school for adults - secondary vocational programs - secondary technical programs - secondary vocational-technical programs - vocational course (pre-school education) II. Non-formal education programmes: language courses, computer courses, general literacy courses, national vocational qualification trainings, courses on integration of immigrants, courses and workshops for health, personal growth, study circles etc. III. Guidance and Counselling and other learning-supporting activities: from1996 Self-directed Learning Centre; from 1999 Centre for Vocational Guidance and Information; 2005 – 2007 Lifelong Learning Centre Savinjska (ESF funded); from 2001 Information and Guidance Centre in Adult Education  IV. Project Work ESF (Centre of Lifelong Learning Savinjska, Raising Literacy Level, Non-formal Education Programmes, Initial Integration of Migrants, Family Center UPI, Validation and Recognition of Non-Formal Knowledge, PHARE 2003: Improving Computer Literacy for the Unemployed – New Opportunities Through Computer Knowledge, Grundtvig learning partnership: Welcome to My Home (2004 - 2005) etc.

Latest improvements concerning accessibility

We have mobile service (counselling, e-learning) and we regularly prepare events (round tables, workshops...) in order to raise awareness concerning adults with special needs. Toilets are physically more accessible.
